We have been adding a few panels of the steel roofing whenever we can. The weather is turning colder and it has been very windy. Before we were battling rain, now we are battling wind and cold. Frost tonight and then turning warmer for a few days before rain comes again. Steven took two sections of a ladder and roped them together so they hang on each side of the roof. We install one panel on each side and then move both sections of ladder over. The wood ladder on the right has carpet around it so it won’t scratch the steel panels when he goes up to install the ridge vent. Steven works on the roof and I hand up the 145″ panels.
Garage
Secure Passage
We purchased our service door from the clearance section of our local home improvement store. We got a great deal because it has a slight ding in the upper trim. We like the half circle leaded window and the paneled look. The garage is now secure and we are happily storing tools within.
We have put tar/felt paper around the windows and the bottom part of the OSB on recommendation of our building inspector

All Felted Up
The roof has roofing felt on both sides. We are ready to start installing the steel roofing.
Framing Inspection Signed Off
We worked hard over the weekend and Monday morning to finish enough of the sheathing for the inspection. The Building Official was impressed by our work. He said he had driven by and observed the building in process but “didn’t know what to expect.” It seems he is now on our side and will help us with the process of rehabbing the house! He knows a way for us to keep the leaded glass windows on the north side second story.
After the inspection we were able to get felt on the east side of the garage.
Rest as Needed
Closing In!
We are closing in the garage roof. Over half of the sheathing is on! A bigger job than we had anticipated. We’ve decided to never build from scratch again. Rehab but not build. We’ll leave building to the experts.
We used plywood for the exposed overhang. Steven routed it to give the look of separate boards. I painted the plywood and the exposed truss boards before we installed the plywood. We used OSB for the rest of the roof. The exposed truss boards are the same color as the metal roof.
We have a framing inspection on Monday so we worked all weekend to finish installing the sheathing. One sheath left to cut and install before 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
