Before and After
Final Inspection
We had the building inspection today. Everything is approved. There are still a few details for the crew to complete but today they removed all the scaffolding. We dug up three bushes on the south side of the house because they will be in the way for the gas line installation. The Bridal Wreath was large and became about 6 different bushes. I planted them along the east (back) lot line for privacy.
Bay Window Shed Roof Removed
The bay window walls stick out above the shed roof. We decided to take off the shed roof on the 12′ bay window section. Steven will install a temporary roof for the winter while we take time to decide what style roof to reinstall in the spring. We want to let more light into the dining room and have the bay window itself more visible.
Front Porch Dormer Removal
The front dormer roof had to come off because of a sagging roof caused by water drainage and roof rot. Steven and I removed the dormer today. We found poor construction and rot. We think it looks better and the roof isn’t sagging as much. Lots of wood missing because of water damage.
Last Details
The carpenters are adding last trims, painting touch-ups and added a LVL (microbeam) between the first and second floors to allow installation of a long narrow window above the south kitchen cabinets and to replace the window we took out shown in the second picture with black plastic covering the opening.
Window Trim
Brian designed our upper window trim. The windows on the lower trim will be the same when we do the porches next spring.
Siding Completion
The siding is completed. The dormer is insulated inside with polystyrene and foamed. Most of the walls are insulated with fiberglass R-15. We will add 1.5″ of polystyrene R-7 after the electrical is installed and inspected.
Dormer insulated Exterior Siding
I insulated the dormer. Fiberglass on the walls and layers of polystyrene under the roof. I spray foamed the cracks. It was an awful job. It got all over my hands. I will leave further jobs to Steven!
I painted the shakes a shade darker than the darkest trim – closest to the roofing. It was satin paint but turned out glossy. We like the color but not the gloss.
The siding is finished! They are now working on the window trims.
