New Siding north porch and bathroom
Installing the LVL to bring open porch up to code.
The open porch was not up to code – to do so we needed to install a double 2×8 LVL. We decided to go from the end corner of the kitchen porch to the corner of the north porch. A total of 40’.
Leveling and Insulating the Kitchen Porch Floor
Steven decided to remove the decking on the kitchen floor – it seems to be redwood and very valuable. He will use part of it to replace damaged pieces in the open porch.
Steven crawled under the joists to attach 1/4” plywood from our stash. It was hard work and a strain on his body. I could then install insulation using leftovers we had, insulation from friends and pieces of rigid foam.
Because of concern for rain, we kept the floor covered with a tarp.
Replacing decking on open porch
Decking had been rotten from dripping water.
Moving on to North Porch
We removed the aluminum storm windows on the west side of the north porch and framed for the new window coming from Steven’s stash. We removed the siding in order to add studs for support. Then we removed the short wall extending out from the north porch. We are preparing for the installation of the LVL. One end will be in the corner of the north porch.

It was time to start redoing the kitchen porch.
