Hickory Flooring is Hard

Hickory flooring is a very hard material and is also hard to install!

First Steven needed to move the very large radiator. We cannot install flooring underneath the legs as it would then be too high for the water connections. We will lay flooring around the feet.

Hickory flooring is a very dense hard material. To install the first two rows, Steven had to drill holes for the nails and they were still difficult to pound through to the rafters. I had marked the position of all the rafters with a black marker and installed underlayment on top of that.

The wall was not straight with the lines of the underflooring so we needed to make adjustments in the first row. We got two rows almost finished before Steven didn’t have enough strength to sink the last row of nails.

The next rows will be installed with a pneumatic nailer which will make it much easier.

Darker Hickory Flooring

We also purchased 7 boxes of a darker 3/4″ hickory flooring which we will use in the south bedroom. We had also stored it in the garage. It sat on top of 8 boxes of lighter hickory 3/4″ flooring which we will use in the middle room. It is still in the garage. To get the flooring upstairs, Steven backed our car to the garage, slid the boxes of flooring into the car, drove the car around to the north side of the house and slid the boxes into the house. He then set up a way to slide the boxes up the stairs! Very ingenious and resourceful! We had purchased all the flooring at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at a fraction of the retail cost.

Hickory Flooring Sorted

We purchased 10 boxes of this hickory flooring. I will be installed in the north bedroom. I sorted it into approximate lengths so we can more easily find just the right length when installing. We had stored it in the garage. My daughter and son-in-law carried the boxes upstairs for us. Thank you Katina and Patricio!

Found More Wallpaper

I had thought I only had one more roll of the north bedroom wallpaper but discovered I had 4 more rolls. I finished the north wall and decided to also do the opposite wall where the bed will be placed. I also did one wall of the closet. Still have wallpaper left but decided to move on to the south bedroom. I had two rolls of wallpaper (again thrift store find).

A Fun Day and a Helping Hand

A friend offered a day of work at Rose Cottage, plus brought a wonderful lunch. The first task we undertook painting the North bedroom windows.

Then Cheryl painted a gold color on the dormer walls and the north wall adjoining the dormer. Looked great.

North Windows Painted

I started washing windows while Cheryl painted but quickly decided it was too hot and moved on to putting up wallpaper in the north bedroom. Cheryl came to help when she had finished painting. I only had one roll of the paper at the house so we were not able to finish it. I have one more roll at home.

Steven was busy with lights in the two bathroom areas. He changed the way the tub room was wired. To do so he had to cut the sheetrock and redo it with a mesh patch and mudding.

New Electrical Box for Light Above the Mirror

The mud needed to dry before sanding so Steven moved on to the wiring for the light in the water closet. First he needed to install the medicine chest so he could determine where to put the electrical box for the light. We had found this medicine chest that someone was throwing away. I painted it and it looked like new.

A Busy Lighting Day

The walls and ceilings are painted and it is time to ready for the final electrical inspection. Steven installed the hall lights, the middle room ceiling light and the south bedroom ceiling fan and light. We had planned to install a fan in the middle room but Steven had a vintage light fixture he really wanted to use. The south bedroom fan and light fixture was a puzzle to determine how to wire it. It had a fan, a middle light fixture and then the lower light with globes. It was also an extremely hot day.
