Tuesday, we put subfloor on the tub floor. Yesterday, we put subfloor on the water closet floor. Today we installed 1/4″ plywood over the subfloor on the first floor. Steven also started the plumbing .
We had approval last winter of the electrical and insulation. We left Rose Cottage after finishing most of the drywall on the second floor. We couldn’t put sheet rock in the bathrooms until the plumbing inspection. Steven purchased an online course on installation of waste pipe that we both watched but I retained only part. We have a licensed plumber to oversee Steven’s work. Steven thought it would only take him a week but there are always unforeseen problems.
We took a break for the holidays and learned that the past month’s heating bill was $250 (just for heating the second floor. It is getting cold and we decided it was a good time to stop for the winter and begin again in spring.
Steven had constructed a platform over the stairway so we could insulate it and keep the cold from flowing up. He reinforced it so we could stand on it to sheet rock the ceiling and walls.
We continued on to the hallway and entrance to north bedroom.
We then completed the sheet rock in the north bedroom – the west street wall and the wall separating this bedroom and the middle room. We wanted to isolate this room so we would not have to heat it. It did make a difference!
We went back to the South Bedroom and completed the West street side.
While Steven was working elsewhere, I went around and installed the electrical boxes.
We have the 2″ insulation installed in almost all of the second floor. It is temporarily installed in the bathroom because we need to install venting and plumbing. We received permission to do our work non-linearly.
We started hanging sheetrock in the south bedroom. It was not as easy as we could have hoped. The polystyrene covering up the studs makes it a bit haphazard. It will be slow going.
It has been cold but we got a warm enough day to raise the long heavy wood ladder to reach to the eaves (about 30′) so Steven could install the outside vent coverings for the two bathroom fan vents. It was still a reach even with the long ladder. I kept my phone set to the dial setting for an emergency.
On the way up the ladder Steven discovered the cover for the incoming electricity conduit was a jar from building the second floor last year. He had to make some adjustments to get it back and place to keep it all rain free.
The north bedroom and the dormer 2″ insulation, taping and ceiling dry wall are finished except for foaming the cracks.
Steven built a wood floor over the stairway and we installed the ceiling. Wish I had remembered to take a photo of the process. The bathroom ceilings are temporarily insulated and we have just a couple smaller pieces of dry wall to install. Then on to foaming the cracks in the 2″ insulation and an inspection before we install the wall sheet rock. The electric heater is keeping us warm but is a bit expensive.
